Switching to a Marketing Career
Marketing can make a great second, or even third, career choice for an individual who has already spent years as a professional in another field. It can be a challenge to transition into marketing from another career, but smart and talented people can turn their prior experience into their greatest asset as a marketer.
Marketing degree programs are growing by the year. New students are flocking to take it on as they choose their major while pursuing a bachelor’s degree. However, a growing number of professionals are now going back to school to get a degree in marketing. It can be difficult to make these kinds of transitions from career to career. However, learning to embrace your prior skills and knowledge and to apply them to the field of marketing can make for a professional who is well-rounded and able to create new and exciting marketing experiences.
Many individuals who have worked for years in management and service positions will find going into a marketing degree program an easy transition. Applying the skills that they have already learned to the field makes them better able to understand the client/professional relationship, as well as the way that buying and selling actually works. Many of these professionals are receiving bachelor’s degrees for the first time, or a second bachelor’s degree on top of one that they have already received.
Others enter marketing degree programs from another field altogether. While some will pursue bachelor’s degrees others will find ways to transition into graduate level marketing degree programs. Individuals who manage this often find that they develop a specialized set of skills which, in many cases, can be used to create new jobs and positions within marketing companies – or even to start a marketing company or research organization of their own.
Those entering marketing degree programs from other professions or holding other degrees may need to keep a few things in mind before throwing themselves in to these programs. One thing to remember is that it may be necessary to take basic courses in fields such as writing or design if those particular skills are not already up to par with other marketing professionals. It should also be noted that internships and entry level jobs can also be forgone in favor of more advanced positions, especially if an individual already has a good working knowledge of the business environment.
While transition into a new career is difficult for anybody, moving into a marketing career can be a highly rewarding experience for many people. This is especially true for those individuals who are looking to challenge themselves, who are looking to reach a greater number of people, and who are excited about becoming a part of this great and dynamic field.
